It’s always nice to see great shows written for kids. I remember spending many an hour in front of the TV watching the classics; and to no one’s surprise many of those same classics were made by Disney. This time around kids get the pleasure of watching the adventures of the Pines twins as they live with their Great Uncle Stan in Gravity Falls, Oregon. The first episode makes a point to introduce all of the core characters and their distinct personalities. Naturally most of the episode’s runtime is spent with our man characters Dipper and Mabel pines. Dipper finds a mysterious journal and is determined to find it’s author, while his sister Mabel is focused on finding herself a summer romance. She does find a strange teen she has a crush on but his appearance and behavior lead Dipper to believe he’s a zombie upon looking up his symptoms in the mysterious journal. There is a funny twist at the end of the episode that’s foreshadowed for people re-watching the series and I won’t spoil it for you, but it is worth a watch.
The characters play very well off each other and they’re all very entertaining, especially “Grunkle” Stan Pines with his scheming personality. The animation is pretty bright and character models remain consistent. If I HAD to complain about something in the show it would be Dipper’s voice actor. All of the characters sound believable except him. He sounds like a grown man and not the 12 year old boy he is supposed to be. This is especially noticeable during the scenes when the two main characters are together. Despite this I look forward to what future episodes bring. And I’m sure you will too.
