What a year for gamers! My wallet HATED ME! Everytime I said this is the last game I am buying for the year something else pops up! So here is my Top Ten favorite games for 2016. Keep an eye out for my Epic Fail list for 2016!
THE LAST GUARDIAN: RELEASED DECEMBER 6, 2016
This game have been in development like forever. Well to be honest it felt like that. Well the wait is over and the game is finally here. The graphics is something reminiscent of “Shadow of the Colossus” and “ICO“. It is an action platform type game where you control a young boy who befriends a giant half-bird-half-mammal creature named Trico. He must manipulate Trico, such as by luring it with food, to reach remote places while evading enemies. It hits the number 10 spot for obvious reasons. I have fond memories of the latter games and only nostalgia made me even try this game out. With the obvious frustrations dealing with Trico this is an instant classic that shouldn’t be missed.
RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER: RELEASED JANUARY 28, 2016
Ah Lara Croft. So much fond memories playing with her. The last game by Crystal Dynamics in 2013 was an awesome experience for me. Although many critics at first slammed the game for being lack luster soon retracted their statements once they realized the full potential of the game. People like us who actually played the game and gave honest reviews shot Tomb Raider to the top as a must have game. So now we are in 2016 and she has come back. This time with more exploration and less Quick Time Events via boss fights. Which is a huge welcome for me. I love the graphics and game mechanics. It reminds me of Uncharted. Although Uncharted is the king. Tomb Raider is the Queen. ALL HAIL THE QUEEN!!!
GEARS OF WAR 4: RELEASED OCTOBER 11, 2016
The Gears of War franchise have been around for a while. I remember the countless nights I stayed up playing the first one. It was a breath of fresh air in regards to the style of gameplay that it brought. One thing that is also amazing about the game is the story line. Literally cried when Dom died. I was like NOOOO! He died like a “G”. Real talk. So Gears of War 4 main character is Marcus Fenix son. So we already know this is gonna be good. Everything we loved about the Gears of War series is back. Also some updated graphics couldn’t hurt. One issue that is a bother to me is when the game starts sometimes the layer of graphics isn’t loaded at once and you have this moment when you see each layer being added before the game starts. Been like that for every Gears of War game. Still the action is intense and the story is something you should check out.
NBA 2K17: RELEASED SEPTEMBER 20, 2016
This game alone destroyed the NBA Live franchise. Year after year they kept perfecting their craft. Now they are the King on the hill. For every Carib Gamer event we always have at least one person who think they can beat The International Badman Blake. Many have tried. None have succeeded. Yet the sheer amount of replay ability with this game is a must have for Basketball fans.
TITANFALL 2: RELEASED OCTOBER 28, 2016
The Original Space, Mech, Run on Wall, boot to face FPS game is back! Exclusive to the Xbox One at launch it was a game that brought back the feeling I got when playing Modern Warfare 2. Funny how that is because the genius minds behind Modern Warfare 2 are the same guys who made this masterpiece. The one thing that we wanted from the first one was a single player campaign mode. So Titanfall 2 delivered a single player campaign mode and drum roll please! NO DLC TO BUY! That is right. Any expansion is yours once you own the game. These guys at Respawn are real gamers.
FINAL FANTASY XV: RELEASED NOVEMBER 29, 2016
I am a huge Final Fantasy Fan and was waiting for this game to be released. I won’t lie I had my doubts. After watching the animated shorts that was on Youtube, also the feature Animated film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. I was hoping that they didn’t sell us a fluff story instead of a game. Well they delivered us a final fantasy worth playing. With an open world to explore, main and side quest to finish I say you got yourself all the ingredients for a good time. The battle system is a joy to play. Definitely worth picking up!
UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF’S END: RELEASED MAY 10, 2016
This right here is a must own for any Playstation 4 owner. Being the only game for me that IS THE STANDARD for story telling ever. This is the kind of game once you start you don’t want to stop playing. You will always find yourself saying “Just let me pass this part!” Everything about this game is on point. From the single player campaign to the multiplayer which adds replay ability. If you don’t own this then you are really missing out.
OVERWATCH: RELEASED MAY 23, 2016
Blizzard did something no other company could do. Deliver an online only multiplayer FPS/MOBA hybrid of a game while making it extremely fun. The idea behind this game makes no sense. It shouldn’t be this addictive. You don’t gain anything but cosmetic swag while playing. You don’t increase in power as you gain levels. Just a number letting others how dedicated you are as a player. Everything about this game screams “Play me. No worries. Have fun.” That is exactly what Blizzard was going for in Overwatch. With the ensemble of characters that all have their unique play style makes for a interesting battle every round. What also makes this game very interesting is the different game modes available to you. Which helps switch things up. With the no pressure vibe to play you can pick this up and play without feeling like you need to be “powered up” to succeed. All that is needed is skill. Once you find a character that suits your play style you are good to go. With a huge online community you will always have someone to play with. Which is why this is a great game for the days when you just want something to play.
CLASH ROYALE: RELEASED JANUARY 4, 2016
Say what?!?! An app in the number 2 spot! What madness is this! Well let me say for all those who will deny the awesomeness that is Clash Royale try it. What separates this game from a lot of those free to play apps flooding the market is the replay ability. Your opponents are living breathing human beings. Each match is always different. Each match test your skills. Playing players from all over the world is both exciting and interesting. With live events that encourages teams to work together. The rivalry to be in the number one spot is real! At any given time you can whip out the game and you never know you may get a new card to your arsenal. Of course you can buy chests but the choice to play and win them is much more satisfying. Did I mention this is available for both Android and iOS!
BATTLEFIELD 1: RELEASED OCTOBER 21, 2016
Battlefield 1 is on the top of the hill for FPS right now. Not only did they took Call of Duty Infinite Warfare from the throne (which wasn’t hard to be honest) they renewed the faith of gamers from their last title Battlefield 4. I was on the fence when this game dropped. I got burned hard with Battlefield 4 and didn’t had that much faith. Call me a believer! I saw the light! From the stunning graphics, smooth game play and chaotic action that only Battlefield can deliver. I was impressed with the single player campaign that usually sucks for the Battlefield series. Well except Battlefield Bad Company 3. That will be and always will be the best Battlefield I have ever played. The only drawback I have is the menus. They are just GOD AWFUL! I takes to much clicks just to get to what you want and also things that should be obvious I couldn’t find and had to google it. Yet the game still shines with 64 and 32 match ups, Vehicle warfare, Great game modes to mix it up and a community that is always online and itching for a fight!
